Freesurfer / IBSR
The subcortical segmentation done with freesurfer is very very
similar the IBSR 18 Scans T1w (43 structures).
Does anyone know if Freesurfer and IBSR images are related ? and how ?
I suspect this IBSR dataset was part of the dataset used to train the freesurfer atlas ? does anyone know if it is the case ?

RE: Freesurfer / IBSR
Hi Michaël,
Sorry for the slow response. That answer is "sort of". Early Freesurfer development included training on labeled MRI brain scans from the Massachusetts General Hospital's (Harvard Medical School) Center for Morphometric Analysis, and that is where the IBSR labeled scans came from. It is possible that some of the scans available on IBSR were used.
The point is: neuroanatomical labeling is done following a specific protocol that gives the precise definition of each region of interest. Freesurfer was trained on scans that were labeled with the same protocol. That protocol has been in development since the mid 1980s.
Andy.
