About

We are pleased to announce the fourth INCF Workshop "Latin American Summer School on Neuroinformatics", to be held in Havana, Cuba from September 16th to September 21st 2013. Latin America is an area where the use of Neuroimaging is currently expanding. There are already several groups in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Cuba carrying out normative and clinical trials using neuroimaging techniques. These groups, together with others, are organized in the Latin American Brain Mapping Network (LABMAN) which has identified that the area is poised to contribute with data and methods to the international effort in Neuroinformatics. Though we have been able to train specific individuals in topics such as image statistical processing and in the use of certain processing pipelines, it is still lacking an integrative course that provides a general field overview and that makes emphasis on creating the infrastructure and personnel for Neuroinformatics nodes in a near future. The purpose of the course to be held in Havana is to fill this gap bringing together recognized leaders in the field in a program with hands-on learning and working targeted towards potential scientific leaders from the region. PhD students or Postdocs from others regions are also invited to apply and to participate under equal eligibility conditions.

This course will be an excellent opportunity to further stimulate new joint research initiatives and for fruitful and interesting discussions on ongoing projects based on students-faculty interactions.

Following the general concept of Neuroinformatics, which tethers three fundamental parts, i.e. Neural modeling, Data Analysis and Databases, the basics topics that the course will cover are:

  • An overview of Neuroinformatics
  • Neural system modeling, from the cell level to large scale models of observable data
  • Neuroimaging techniques, preprocessing, image fusion
  • Neuroimaging Statistical Analysis
  • Connectomics
  • Human Brain Mapping databases: infrastructure, organization; normative studies and clinical trials
  • Neuroimaging data sharing
  • Issues in developing Neuroinformatics in our region

Course material will be made available to the public and will include presentations, publications, electronic books, software and toolboxes, data analysis pipelines related the course topics, data from different Neuroimaging modalities (EEG/MEG, fMRI, DTI etc.) used in the lectures for didactic purposes, international databases information and general guidelines, as well as student's presentations. Other materials proposed by the INCF to disseminate the importance of Neuroinformatics will be also available.

Target Audience

The course is aimed to Ph.D students, postdocs and faculty related to Neuroscience and Neuroinformatics with backgrounds like psychology, mathematics, computer sciences, physics, bioengineering, medicine and others.

The number of accepted participants will be limited to 26 students.
