Workshop Title: Hippocampus: From synapses to behaviour

Summary:
We are pleased to announce the workshop titled ‘Hippocampus: From Synapses to Behaviour’ set to take place at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Pune, India, December 1-3rd 2013. This workshop has been organised under the auspices of the Indian National Node for Neuroinformatics in association with the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, India.

Investigations into the hippocampal formation span different scales of organisation ranging from the mechanisms governing the functioning of single synapses to the dynamics of large scale neuronal networks and its effect on behavior. The hippocampus has served as an exemplary model system over the last several decades. Much of our understanding of the principles of brain function come from extensive studies of the hippocampus at various levels of detail. At the subcellular scale, many of the signalling pathways underlying short and long–term plasticity have been deciphered from studies of the CA3–CA1 synapse of the hippocampus. The interplay between excitatory and inhibitory neurons in the hippocampal formation generate a rich repertoire of spatiotemporal patterns. These patterns, in turn, play a functional role in encoding and recalling environmental inputs. Neurological disorders associated with hippocampal dysfunction has provided us with key insights into its role in behaviour. At each scale of organization a synergy between quantitative modelling and experimental studies of the hippocampus has made significant contributions to our understanding of brain function in health and in disease. The goal of this workshop is to bring together computational and experimental neurobiologists to address exciting questions that will advance our present understanding, spur future collaborations and lead to new directions of investigation.

We would also appreciate it if you could pass this information on to your colleagues and students who might be interested in attending.
