Applications Of Unbiased Stereology To Neural Systems Posted By: David Kennedy - Aug 15, 2008Tool/Resource: Conferences, Workshops and Meetings 2008 STEREOLOGY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM “Applications Of Unbiased Stereology To Neural Systems” One-Day Stereology ShortCourse August 21, 2008: New York City, New York Three-Day Stereology Workshop November 12-14, 2008: Kent Island, Maryland 2008 Fall Stereology Workshop on the Chesapeake Bay For more information see: http://www.disector.com BACKGROUND For the past four decades members of the International Society For Stereology have developed reliable and efficient methods for assumption- and model-free methods of unbiased (design-based) stereology. Through efficient sampling and analysis of biological tissue, these approaches provide state-of-the-art research tools in the neurosciences, psychology, toxicology, and pathology. An increasing number of journal editors and grant reviewers in the biological sciences prefer these approaches for reliable quantitative analysis of morphological endpoints, such as changes in cell number, mean cell volume, fiber and capillary length, and surface area., and this trend is expected to continue. Computerized stereology systems introduced in the past decade further enhanced the throughput efficiency of modern stereology. STEREOLOGY TRAINING In the mid 1990s, the SRC established the Stereology Workshops and ShortCourses to train bioscientists in the principles and practices of design-based stereology. The format for this training includes formal lectures, presentations of published studies, demonstrations of computerized stereology systems, and the opportunity for Q & A sessions to address specific projects, all in a relaxed, collegial atmosphere. The material covered by these courses include a comprehensive historical review; techniques of efficient systematic-random sampling across levels (individuals, structures, microscopic fields); and, unbiased geometric probes for reliable analysis of Number, Volume, Length, Surface Area and their variation. Online registration now available: http://www.disector.com/stereology-instr... SPECIFIC AIMS • To introduce the theory & practice of modern stereology as applied to neural structure. • To improve skills in experimental design & critical analysis of quantitative neuromorphometry. • To train participants on the use of cutting edge computerized stereology systems. • To provide an informal environment for fruitful exchange between participants and instructors. PROGRAM FACULTY For the past decade the SRC’s educational programs have been organized and taught by Peter R. Mouton, Ph.D., Director of the Stereology Resource Center (http://www.disector.com), and an internationally recognized expert in the applications of design-based stereology to biomedical research. Dr. Mouton is the single-author of the bestselling stereology test, “Principles And Practices Of Unbiased Stereology: An Introduction For Bioscientists” (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2002) and the official United States representative of the International Society For Stereology. For the three-day 15th Annual Fall Stereology Workshop on Kent Island, MD, Dr. Mouton is honored to be joined by three professional scientists and veteran instructors at this course, all masters of the craft of stereology and the art of teaching: • Arun M. Gokhale, Ph.D., Professor, Materials Sciences and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA. • Kebreten F. Manaye, M.D., Associate Professor, Physiology and Biophysics, Howard University College Of Medicine in Washington, DC • Jeffrey M. Long, Ph.D., University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX. At the Stereology Workshop and Stereology ShortCourses invited speakers will also provide Special Guest Lectures that focus on their own practical experience swith design-based stereology methods. TOPICS COVERED • Overview of Unbiased Stereology • The Cavalieri Principle • Disector versus Density • Total Neuron Number • Variability Analysis • Systematic-Random Sampling • Isotropy and Anisotropy • Analysis of Curvilinear Structures (fibers, vessels, etc). • Virtual isotropic probes (space balls, virtual cycloids) • Local Size Estimators • Automatic Analysis of Binary Images • Practical Study Design • One-on-one discussion of participants' projects • Computerized stereology systems and stereology-related equipment STEREOLOGER Participants of the Summer Stereology ShortCourse will receive an interactive demonstration of STEREOLOGER, the state-of-the-art computerized stereology system, and attendees of the 15th Annual Fall Stereology Workshop on Kent Island, MD will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on analysis of actual tissue sections on computerized stereology systems (for more information: http://www.stereologer.com.
