Which R packages did you have in mind?
R itself can be run with a very sparse configuration.
However, if you can call packages to run processes in parallel your procesding time will be much faster. You will also need enough internal storage for your fMRI data.This can vary widely pet experiment. Probably a minimum of 2gb per subject session.
Experiment on a cloud platform or whatever you have on hand to get a better idea
