I think the point is that most of us accept that speeding is not that bad.  It used to be the same for drunk driving in the UK, but that has changed.

The current standard way of publishing allows us to wave our hands a little and say 'trust us we did this right'.   Most people grew up in labs where this is standard practice.   Disputing this practice then seems like unnecessary fussing over details.  I think it isn't, and that the current system is badly broken and is letting through many wrong results, but it's very difficult to show that, and so I suspect the instinct of most people is that this issue is not very important.
