Hi Ged,

Yes, Mango is great both for (a) and (b) - I use both FSL and SPM but prefer Mango for visualization since it's so easy and clean. For (a), Mango has options for transparency and user-created color tables, and you can overlay multiple maps (e.g., use the "logical" color tables). There is a "Generate Layout" plugin that allows you to create nice publication-ready jpegs with legends and labels (colorbars, etc.) that can be edited. Mango also has one of the easiest surface rendering utilities that I've seen. For (b) there is another plugin called "Cine Tool" - I don't think there's a slice limit... (c) is something that hasn't been done yet, but might be added in the future. same for (d).
