Correct, I do understand that :)  I am in the unique situation of being the only neuroscience person with my advisor, however I still think that it's unlikely that a PI would make that kind of investment for even his or her lab.  The resource would have to be unbelievably useful.  In my experience, a couple hundred dollars is the maximum amount that would be convincing for something not totally unbelievable.  Thus, I still think that open source makes sense, if more widespread use is the underlying goal.
