RE: More effective than gratis/libre?
Wow. Great breakdown Torsten. Again, I am not on "Andy's team", but I pay for a license for my lab.

If you want to justify the usefulness of the data, Andy has made quite a bit of the data available totally free* via the MICCAI workshops that I co-organized with Simon Warfield.

Whole brain segmentation: https://masi.vuse.vanderbilt.edu/worksho...
Deep brain structures: https://masi.vuse.vanderbilt.edu/worksho...

The annual license is for "new" data - basically Andy's yearly productivity. So, you can pay once and use that data to meet your needs for a long time. If you need new data, then pay again.

I think the business model is reasonable, but it definitely requires a bit of deep thinking to justify the scientific case.

Cheers,
Bennett

* The data are non-redistributable and you have to agree to the license terms by registering for the data download.
